What is Plett Tourism doing to help during COVID-19?

During these unusual circumstances of COVID-19, there is no ‘normal’ and many of us are undertaking projects and taking on tasks that we would not normally be expected to perform.

Plett Tourism and its team members have been involved in a number of such tasks, with each member playing to their strengths by providing services that are most suited to their professions.

A brief list of tasks undertaken:

Projects

  • Disinfecting of Plett using F10SC by spraying and fogging (where possible) – started on 30 March 2020
  • Ongoing F10SC by spraying and fogging on a daily basis
  • Setup of SPAR feeding scheme to provide parcels of food to families in need
  • Setup of JAM feeding scheme to provide meals to those in need
  • Project to provide free disinfectant for Plett, by buying and installing eight 5000 litre JoJo tanks and filling them with diluted F10SC disinfectant

Dissemination of information

  • Setup of new web page on web address www.plettcoronavirus.co.za to direct people to information about COVID-19 relevant to Plett
  • Development of a new video about Plett during Lockdown to inform people of what is being done to prevent the spread of the disease
  • Development of a whiteboard animation in three languages to raise awareness and guide people on how to prevent infection and stop the spread
  • Posting on website about government gazettes, speeches, letters, notices, tourist information, business information and many other items to inform people of what is going on during these abnormal circumstances
  • Posting on Facebook, Twitter about above info
  • Development of mailers and newsletters to send information to the relevant tourism industry businesses regarding information that affects them directly
  • Posting Lunchbox videos from other parties to assist in spreading information about how to prevent spreading the disease
  • Posting information about the wearing of masks, in particular Masks4AllPlett
  • Design of info-graphic to inform and educate the public on how to prevent the spread of the disease
  • Development of survey regarding travel post COVID-19

Administrative

  • Interface with WC government, Wesgro on an ad hoc basis about once a week
  • Interface with GRKK Disaster Cluster at the regular weekly meeting for updates on all sectors, and tourism input.
  • Event postponements and liaison with event organisers – Rage, Birding Festival, Garden Route WF, Gqom, etc.
  • Wesgro virtual event funding applications – for PT: Plett Winelands, Plett Penguin release and Plett Arts Festival
  • Wesgro virtual guide promotion liaison
  • Almost daily updates to Plett Tourism database and website on official notices regarding Covid
  • Almost daily updates on relief funding and labour processes
  • Sending out daily information via community WhatsApp groups
  • Telephonic assistance on tourists in distress, isolation regulations and ad hoc questions
  • Survey to attempt to determine traveler sentiment when lockdown lifts
  • Planning Plett Conversations webinar in the pipeline
